what to know about tesamorelin.

What it is

Tesamorelin is a lab-made version of the hormone that tells your pituitary gland to release growth hormone. It is FDA-approved, as Egrifta, to reduce excess belly fat in adults with HIV-related lipodystrophy. Other uses are off-label.

Who it may help

Adults with a medical reason that your provider thinks it may help. It is not safe during pregnancy, and it is not used in people with active cancer or certain pituitary problems.

What to expect

Your provider reviews your history and labs, including blood sugar. Tesamorelin is a daily shot under the skin. Follow-up visits check your progress, blood sugar and any side effects.

how tesamorelin works at home.

1. Is it the right fit?

Tesamorelin is FDA-approved to reduce excess belly fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Your provider explains what is known about other uses before you decide.

2. Baseline checks

Your provider checks blood sugar, A1c and IGF-1, and measures your waist. People with diabetes need closer sugar checks.

3. Daily injection

Tesamorelin is a once-daily shot under the skin of the belly. Your provider teaches you how to prepare and give it.

4. Follow-up

In studies, belly fat changes were measured over about six months. Your provider rechecks labs and waist size and decides with you whether to continue.

Common side effects

Joint pain, redness or itching at the shot site, swelling in the hands or feet, muscle pain and tingling are the most common.

Blood sugar and IGF-1

Tesamorelin can raise blood sugar. Your provider watches your glucose and A1c, and checks IGF-1 so it does not climb too high.

Who should not use it

Do not use tesamorelin if you are pregnant, have active cancer, or have had pituitary surgery, a pituitary tumor or head radiation. Belly fat usually returns after stopping.

Room temperature is not the same as Las Vegas temperature

Some brand-name tesamorelin forms can be stored at room temperature, but the label sets an upper limit. In a Las Vegas summer, that means an air-conditioned room, never a garage, car or patio.

Blood sugar in the heat

Tesamorelin can raise blood sugar, and dehydration can push readings higher too. Drink water steadily in hot months and tell your provider if you notice more thirst or urination than usual.

Labs at home

Glucose, A1c and IGF-1 can be drawn during your home visit so you do not have to sit in a lab waiting room.
