what to know about the Comprehensive Thyroid Panel.

What it is

This panel usually includes TSH, free T4 and free T3, which show how your thyroid is working, plus TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies, which can show autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's.

Who it may help

Adults with symptoms like tiredness, weight change, feeling cold or hot, hair loss or mood changes, or with a family history of thyroid disease.

What to expect

Your provider draws your blood at home. At your follow-up, you go through what each result means and any next steps.

how the thyroid panel works at home.

1. Choose the right tests

Your provider reviews your health history, symptoms and goals, then explains what the thyroid panel checks and whether it fits you.

2. Prepare

You are told whether to fast and which supplements or medicines to pause before the draw. Stop biotin supplements for the time your provider advises, since biotin can cause false results.

3. Blood draw at home

Your provider draws blood at your home, labels it and sends it to the lab. Most draws take only a few minutes.

4. Results visit

When results are back, your provider walks you through each number, what it means and what, if anything, to do next.

the thyroid panel safety and monitoring.

What is measured

TSH is the main screening test. Free T4 and free T3 are the thyroid hormones themselves. Antibodies (TPO and thyroglobulin) can show autoimmune thyroid disease.

Things that can skew results

Biotin, recent illness, pregnancy and some medicines, such as steroids and amiodarone, can change thyroid results. Your provider reads results with these in mind.

If treatment is needed

An underactive thyroid is usually treated with daily thyroid hormone and regular blood checks. An overactive thyroid may need a specialist referral.

New York lab rules

Labs that test samples from New York patients must hold a New York State permit for that test. Your provider uses a permitted lab, which is why the exact lab used in Brooklyn may differ from other states.

Tired all the time?

Fatigue in a busy city often has many causes. Thyroid testing helps rule one in or out, and your provider looks at sleep, iron and stress too.

Testing at the same time each time

Thyroid blood is drawn at home, ideally at a consistent time of day if you are being retested.
